All You - 2 year subscription for $17.99

I've mentioned the magazine All You before & wanted to pass on this great deal. Visit Deal Seeking Mom to get a 2 year subscription for only $17.99! As I've mentioned before, I love this magazine. It is probably the only magazine I read cover to cover each month. All You also includes great coupons in each issue.

Build And Grow

My kids love going to Lowes for their Build and Grow Clinics. They offer them on Saturday mornings, usually twice a month from 10:00-11:00 a.m. They are come & go, the projects generally only take 30 min. or less to complete. Projects are fairly easy, my 8 & 9 year olds work on their own, my 4 year old needs a little help. They also get a kid sized Lowes apron to keep, a certificate of the project completed & a patch. Best of all - It's FREE!

This Saturday, March 28th, kids can make a yard mobile. On April 11th, they can make a birdhouse.

You can go to Lowes Build and Grow for more details & to see the projects. You can also sign up to attend a clinic, however sign up is not necessary.

Time & Cost Saving Tips

With 4 kids, I need to do as much time saving as I can & the kitchen is one area I find great success in that. My husband comes home from work at 4:00 & I don't like being in the kitchen cooking at that time, therefore I do all I can ahead of time. One of my biggest time savers & a huge cost saver is by doing a baking day 1-2 times a month. I bake & prepare meals for the entire month in one day. I will share more on that at another time. Today I just wanted to jot down some easy ways to save time in the kitchen. Feel free to add to the comments on what you do!

I often purchase the 3.5 lb. bags of frozen chicken breasts. I will throw the entire bag, frozen, into a crockpot & let them cook all day. We love how the chicken turns out, it is so tender. We then usually use half of that chicken for a meal that night, then cube the chicken & pop it into the freezer for the next meal. If I am running behind on time & know we need the chicken that night to speed up the process, I will defrost them in the microwave for 20 min. before putting them into the crockpot. Also - be sure to spray your crockpot with non-stick spray before putting in the chicken.

We always purchase the large size packages of hamburger. I will do one of 2 things, I will divide it as soon as I get home from the store & put it in freezer bags. Or, I will cook it all, then divide & freeze. To take it a step further, I often take half of it, make it into a meatloaf to freeze & the rest will usually make 2 - 1 lb. packages.

I really do the same sort of thing with several things I get at the store. Aldi is my favorite place to buy fresh produce, especially pineapple. I will buy 6-7 pineapples at a time when the have them for .99. I bring them home, cut them up into snack size bags & put into the freezer.

When I make spaghetti sauce or fettucine sauce, I like to make a double batch & freeze half.

A great way to make kids lunches easier, is to make up PB&J sandwiches & freeze them individually. My kids will just pull one out of the freezer & put it into their lunchbox. By lunch time, it is thawed out.

To save money, instead of buying the single serving sized snacks (which are incredibly handy to take on the go), I buy the larger sizes & divide it up into snack sized Ziploc bags. This is also an easy job for the kids to do.

And to save time, I do alot of crockpot cooking!

Decorating on a Budget

Spring is almost here & I believe we are all ready to see winter go. One way to welcome spring is by adding a touch of new decor. There are so many things you can do for very little money to change your decor. One of the most dramatic things you can do is paint. Paint can change the entire look of a room. Go for something totally different!

Change or add lighting. Candles are a great inexpensive way to do this! Group several candles together, or tie a couple of tapers together with some scrap fabric. Decorative light fixtures are another way to change the look of your room. Add a wall sconce or an inexpensive lamp. Lighting can not only change the look of your room, but the feel of your room by adding ambiance.

Don't overlook the little things. Change your shower curtain and/or towels. Add decorative moulding to a doorway. Put out a vase of flowers or just add a sprig here & there. I like to put them in old canning jars.

For inexpensive art, frame your child's artwork. Several family photos arranged on a wall is a great way to fill a large space. The things you can frame is limitless! Postcards, a page from a favorite book for a child's room, or the front of a box of a board game. Use your computer to print out a favorite quote on some nice card stock to frame.

Add fabrics to your room. You can do this by adding pillows & throws, or just take a scrap piece of fabric to add under a lamp or picture.

Instead of purchasing new furniture, give an outdated couch a face lift with a slip cover. Move furniture around, putting it in a different room.

ALL YOU

You may have seen me mention coupons coming from All You. All You is one of my favorite magazines. It offers tips on saving money, fashion, your home, & more. It is a "down to earth" kind of magazine. Tips that I would really use, tips that are attainable. All You is available only by subscription or sold at Walmart.

You can check out All You online & receive 2 free trial issues. All You also contains several coupons in each magazine. Of all the free magazines I have received over the years, All You is the only one that I have a paid subscription to, and it is the only one that I read cover to cover each month.

Get your kids reading!

Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. Book Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan Learning.

One thing kids can earn is a free 6 month subscription to Highlights.

My kids team up, both under the same login name, so that they can earn points quicker for the bigger prizes. This has especially great in the summer, giving them a little extra incentive to keep on reading through the summer.

Quick & Easy Ravioli

This recipe is just as it is called, quick & easy. I almost always use this when I am delivering a meal to someone. It is also a standby when we are in a hurry, with no time to prepare a meal.

Ingredients -
1 bag frozen ravioli
1 jar of your favorite Spag. sauce
1/4 C. water
2 C. shredded mozzarella

  1. Defrost your ravioli. To make it quicker, I place the ravioli, sauce & water in a bowl & pop it in the microwave for 1-3 minutes.
  2. Place ravioli, sauce & water in a baking dish, cover with mozzarella cheese.
  3. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes, until bubbly.

For a quick meal to take to someone, I throw this in a disposable pan, and take some sort of bread or rolls, along with a bag of salad & ice cream for dessert!

Be sure to check out my earlier Walgreens post to find the monthly free after rebate deals!

A few things to remember with Walgreens -

  • Easy Saver Catalog is found in the front of the store with the ad, it is a small booklet that contains coupons & monthly rebate info.
  • Register Rewards are printed at the register, after you have bought an item. These can be used like cash on your next purchase at Walgreens.
  • Register Rewards are considered a manufacturer coupon. Therefore, you must count that as a coupon, and not have more manufacturer coupons than items you are purchasing.
  • The coupons found in the ad & in the Easy Saver catalog are store coupons, so you can "stack" them with manufacturer coupons.
  • How you present your coupons can save you a few extra dollars - at Walgreens, the best way to do it - first give them any Register Rewards you are using, then manufacturer coupons, then store coupons.
  • For your rebates, always have them put on your Walgreens gift card. Doing this gives you an extra 10% back! The first time you do this, it will take 4-6 weeks to get your gift card, after which they just reload the gift card you already have & it only takes a few days to get your rebate!

Reward/Loyalty programs

One way we "splurge" is by joining loyalty/reward programs.

My Coke Rewards - when you purchase a Coke product, it has a code either under the cap, or inside the box. You can enter those codes at my coke rewards, which you can then redeem for prizes. I've gotten several $10 gift cards to Subway through them.

Pampers Gifts to Grow - I often get Pampers at a very good price, combining sales & coupons. Inside their packages is a code to enter at their website. They give away several things for your kids. Great to put up for gifts.

My favorite by far is MyPoints. There is several ways you can earn points through MyPoints, the easiest is simply clicking on emails they send you. They will send a couple emails to your inbox each day, simply click on the rectangle labeled "Get Points". You can also earn points by shopping online & taking surveys. You then get to redeem your points for gift cards to well known restaurants & retailers. I have been a member of MyPoints for several years & have earned over $400 worth of gift cards. I often use these gift cards as gifts. But, this is also how Jay & I can have a free date night! It really doesn't bother me, having the MyPoints emails come to my regular email account, however, you can set up a free email account & have them all sent to their.

Finding ways to save

When you are living on a limited income, it is sometimes hard to find ways to save money. One thing to remember, every little bit counts. All to often we think big, however every little bit does add up! Our family chooses not to use credit cards, if there is something we want, we pay cash for it, this means needing to have a fund to pay for those things. We have found a few painless ways to stash some cash.
  1. Use direct deposit of your paycheck if you can. My husband's employer will deposit into several accounts. We have an account set up for us, and one for each of the kids. We automatically have money put into each account with each paycheck. We have $5 put into each of the kids accounts with each paycheck & that is what we use to pay for their summer activities.
  2. Save your change, instead of spending it. For example, when you are at the store & your total is $5.57, give them $6. We have one of those large crayon banks, it takes quite a bit to fill it up & we have had up to $250 in change in there. We generally use that money for a weekend vacation.
  3. Round up your checks that you write, if you write a check for $12.39, write it in your register for $13.
  4. If you are the type of person who puts all or even some of Christmas on a credit card, what about opening up a Christmas Club account. Most banks have these. You choose the amount you put into it each week & they will mail you a check in November.
  5. When you get a raise, save that money. It is money you have not lived off of before that, so why not save it?
  6. Each year, up the amount you put into your retirement account by at least 1%.

If you don't already save, it can be scary to start the process. I suggest starting out small, rather than not at all. Just put aside $10-$20 out of each paycheck. Start with a regular savings account, once you are comfortable with that, add in the Christmas club & so on. We have an account that we usually clean out every couple of months to purchase something that is needed. However, if we didn't put money into that account, we wouldn't have the money when we need it.

Avoiding junk mail

Signing up for freebies, can lead to a ton of junk mail. However, if you follow a few easy steps, it can reduce that tremendously!
  1. For most freebies, you do not have to sign up to receive additional info from the company.
  2. Several companies automatically check the box that requests additional info from the company. Be sure to uncheck that box.
  3. Sign up for a free email account & use that address when you sign up for freebies.
  4. If you do get email from that company, somewhere at the bottom of the email should be an unsubscribe button, click on that to cancel anything you get from that company.

Honestly, I have never had a problem getting junk mail. I maybe get 2-3 junk mail a day. I just make sure to uncheck any of those boxes a company might have checked for me.
